A couple of weeks ago, I was working on lesson plans and read this in Nick's science book:
Tears produced by strong emotions contain chemicals that do not appear (to any great extent) in tears produced by eye irritants. These chemicals include manganese ( a chemical depressant), leucine-enkephalin (chemical which helps control pain ), and the adrenocorticotrophic hormone (a chemical produced by bodies under stress). When you excrete these chemicals by crying, the net effect is to make you feel better. By releasing these toxins, the tears serve to chemically and physically make the crier feel less depressed!
Interestingly enough, humans are the only organisms that can cry as a result of emotion.
